King Caelus of Uranus

“. . .and I am counting the days until I can see you again,” the recording said, and King Caelus paused it to look at his wife.  He had watched this newest report three times, just to see her face and hear her voice.  He touched the screen and sighed; he knew what he was getting into when he married her, but he missed her so.

It was no easy fate, being a senshi of the outer worlds; the vast majority of their time had to be spent at their posts, supporting the magic web that protected their system from outside invaders.  Twice a year they were allowed to return home for a day; just two days a year with their families and friends.

“Such a lonely fate for someone who loves dancing so much,” King Caelus said, to himself and to the universe at large.  One day, she'll be able to come home to stay,  he thought, then scowled in frustration.  But only because our daughter will have taken up the mantle and will take her place in that void!  Anger flashed through his chest in a hot wave, but then he wrestled it down and began his mantra again:

Fate is what it is.  The anger is normal and reasonable, but ultimately unhelpful.  Focus on what you can do, on what you have before you.  Love her whether she is here or far away, forever.

Calm settled through his being again, just as there was a knock on the door.

“Come,” said King Caelus as he rose from his chair, and the door opened to reveal his ten-year-old daughter on the other side.  She looked much like her mother, except with his dark blue eyes.  She had recently cut her hair short on a whim, and King Caelus was still getting used to the new look.  His own light blue hair was just long enough for a short ponytail, and a curly lock fell over his forehead.

“Papa, the ministers are here to talk to you,” Princess Theia said gently.  King Caelus could tell just from the concern in her eyes that she knew he had been listening to the recordings again.  He marshaled his good spirits and strode forward with a smile.

“Is that so?  Then I'd best see what they want,” King Caelus said, earning a smile in return from his daughter.  He stepped out of the room, back into the world, and took his daughter's hand as they went to the main hall of the castle.
I'm back!  I don't know where the time goes, really; but as a personal goal, I'm trying to finish this drabble series this year.  I only have two more to go, right?  Princess Theia is Haruka's past self, of course.  I came up with the idea of the web because it occurred to me that while Pluto has the Gate to protect, Uranus and Neptune were apparently just stationed at random places out in space, which wouldn't really be very effective for keeping intruders out (space is big - really big); but if they were maintaining a magic barrier at its weak points, that would make some sense, right?  Anyway, enjoy the new piece!
Sailor Moon belongs to Naoko Takeuchi, Toei, Viz, and probably others who are not me.
King Caelus is mine.
